Thematic Maps: A representation of data to show trends or patterns. Data is highlighted or emphasized using properties and values, such as color and shading.

Thematic maps

A thematic map displays selected information relating to specific themes, such as yield, productivity, leaf analysis results, soil capability areas, cover crop establishment, previous land-use, etc. In a GIS these features are categorised separately and stored in different map themes or overlays. Other themes include contour elevations, roads, rivers, drains or environmental hot spots.

This way of organising data in the GIS makes maps much more flexible to use since these themes can be combined in any manner that is useful (individual themes can be 'turned on' and 'off' as needed).

In OMP, all data can be analyzed in thematic maps, showing proximity, spatial information and relationships.

Using thematic maps: some examples

A common topic for a thematic map is the presentation of FFB yield data per ha (tonnes FFB ha-1) on a block map. You would normally concentrate on the highest or lowest yielding areas, and use additional map themes on ABW, bunch number per tree, round length, harvester productivity, etc, to evaluate block performance.

Maps showing fertilizer recommendation and application provide support to field managers responsible for the application, and the help estate managers in monitoring the progress of the fertilization programme.

Application maps are also a presice and efficient method for historical documentation (EMS, ISO 14000) of inorganic and organic inputs into the field.

FFB yield data per ha

In this example we use thematic maps to evaluate the data for the highest yielding blocks.

Aerial Fertilization of Oil Palm

Today’s technology is allowing for significant improvements in techniques associated with aerial fertilization. This article outlines the economic and nutrient efficiencies gained in an oil palm plantation currently operating a successful aerial fertilization program. Technologies used include DGPS and GIS thematic maps
