Software details

In OMP-MIS and OMP-GIS, the common purpose is to support data analysis and decision-making.

A management information system normally uses a ranking indicator to present data in a best to worst order. Spatial data analysis uses geographycal parameters, e.g. location, proximity, spatial distribution

OMP-GIS and spatial data analysis

What makes spatial data analysis interesting:

  • looking at data geographically can often suggest new insights and explanations by showing block data in spatial relation to each other.
  • spatial connections are often unrecognized without GIS, but can be vital to understanding and managing activities and resources.

Examples:

Yield gap analysis: where are the areas where you loose most of potential yield and what are the reasons.

Round length analysis: in which areas of the estate do you have the longest harvesting rounds. Are long harvesting rounds causing a lower bunch weight and a loss of yield ?

In general...

A Geographic Information System uses geographically referenced data as well as non-spatial data and includes operations, which support spatial analysis

  • in GIS, the common purpose is decision-making, for managing yield, fertilizer input, pesticides as well as resources, transportation or any spatially distributed entities.
  • the connection between the elements of the system is geography, e.g. location, proximity, spatial distribution
  • GIS integrates spatial and other kinds of information within a single system - it offers a consistent framework for analyzing geographical data
  • by putting maps and other kinds of spatial information into digital form, GIS allows us to manipulate and display geographical knowledge in new and exciting ways
  • GIS makes connections between activities based on geographic proximity
  • looking at data geographically can often suggest new insights, explanations
  • these connections are often unrecognized without GIS, but can be vital to understanding and managing activities and resources
  • e.g. we can link toxic waste records with village locations through geographic proximity
