Yogya to Prambanan
-
avoid the main road, instead, use
the small road along the irrigation channel from the bypass. You'll
hit the mainroad again 5km outside Prambanan
-
Alternative: drive up to Pakem, turn
east, not further up to Kaliurang, and follow the roadsigns to Solo
|
Boko
- This old residence of the former Javanese kings is
one of the most spectacular places to overlook the Prambanan plain and
the volkanoes in the distance.
|
Klaten
- Klaten has a one way road system, which is a bit twisted.
Stay on the direction to Solo, until you're out of town. About 10km
out of Klaten, take the road up to Boyolali. In fact, you can take a
couple of smaller roads all leading up to B. Just be careful, not to
end up in Solo.
|
|
Boyolali
- Follow the main direction to Semarang, then turn left
towards Selo (it goes straight up for the next 10km). Be careful if
you ask for the way. Friendly Indonesians tend to send you back to Solo
(Surakarta), if you ask for Selo (the tiny village in the western
direction!). So, be aware about general directions and use a compass.
|
Selo
- It's all straight up hill in the beginning, but then
the nice and twisty parts start. Lots of fun and good views of the Merapi
lava slopes. You can walk up to the top of Merapi from Selo (4-5h) or
stay overnight in a small losmen. Going downhill again into the rice
paddies of the Muntilan plain in the afternoon is even more exciting.
You'll see incredible colours against the sun set while driving west.
|
Muntilan and Borobudur
- Muntilan is famous for stone carving, and you can
extend your tour to Borobudur if you want, and then drive back to Yogya
on the main road.
- I almost always prefer to skip Borobudur and to go
up again towards Turi and Kaliurang instead, which gives me more nice
backroads for serious driving, and then coming back to Yogya from the
North.
